“During challenging times, such as logistical hurdles, we draw strength from the stories of those we serve. Each success, no matter how small, reinforces the importance of our work.”
That’s what motivates the team at LMI in Sudan to keep going while the country experiences the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, say LMI deputy program manager Faisal Radi, and Kordofan area coordinator Mugtaba Ahmed Alsafi.
“The vision of a future where every individual has access to adequate food and a dignified life keeps us focused and resilient even in challenging situations, and collaborating with dedicated colleagues who share a common purpose creates a supportive environment where we uplift one another.” Prior to the rise of conflict between warring parties in April 2023, people were already struggling with food insecurity in Sudan. The situation was dire, especially for marginalized communities, and humanitarian assistance was crucial for supporting those affected.
Two years on, the civil war, economic instability, and climatic challenges have contributed to the rapid increase in both the severity of and number of people experiencing hunger. Over half the population of Sudan are experiencing crisis levels of food insecurity, and famine-like conditions have become a reality for over 600,000 people.
Working as humanitarian actors in North Kordofan state where conflict poses an ever-present threat to their food assistance programming isn’t an easy task for LMI. Mitigating those risks takes strategic planning, continuous monitoring, and constant flexibility, as well as establishing trusted local partnerships, utilizing secure communication channels, and prioritizing staff training and safety.
“These measures help us navigate the complexities of working in a high risk environment, while ensuring we maintain the trust and support of the affected population and continue providing critical life-saving assistance,” say Faisal and Mugtaba.
This year, LMI has started a new food assistance project in North Kordofan, with support from ERDO, Foodgrains Bank, and the Government of Canada.

The project will provide monthly food parcels to 2,250 vulnerable households, reaching 11,250 individuals with vital food support.
“By addressing the root causes of food insecurity and enhancing community resilience, we hope to contribute to a brighter future for the people of North Kordofan state.”
