In a time of growing global crises and overwhelming cuts to international development, Canadian values of compassion, equality, and justice are needed now more than ever.
Official Development Assistance (ODA) – or in nongovernmental terms, international aid – plays a critical role in addressing some of the biggest challenges faced by people in need around the world. It’s an essential part of Canada’s foreign policy, and of the work we do at the Foodgrains Bank. And while it is an example of compassion by wealthier nations, it’s also good for donor countries themselves.
When we help other countries recover from disasters, reduce poverty, and build stronger societies, we contribute to peace and stability which benefits all countries, while also creating trade opportunities around the world for Canada.
As part of the global community, here at home in Canada we are called to stand together, to uphold dignity, bring compassion, and live out our values. We cannot back down from our responsibility to our global neighbours.

“Each day is a battle to provide for my eight year old grandson Tafara, who looks to me for strength and care,” says Taniso, a widow living in Gutu, Zimbabwe. Taniso is participating in a food assistance project implemented by Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC), with support from The United Church of Canada, Foodgrains Bank, and the Government of Canada. Through this project, 2,669 households (12,000 individuals) are receiving monthly food packages for six months to help them endure the lean season. “Today, l hold more than just food in my hands – I hold hope, compassion, and the reassurance that we are not forgotten. To those who made this possible, you have lifted a heavy burden from my heart and given Tafara and me a chance to face tomorrow with dignity, and for that l say thank you.” (Photo: ZCC)
For the past 20 years, Canada’s contribution to our ODA has averaged 0.31% of our Gross National Income. And while many countries have agreed that 0.7% should be the goal, we know that our investment into international aid has reinforced Canada’s reputation as a country that represents our values of compassion and justice for everyone, especially the world’s most vulnerable people.
These are the values that make the world a better place. And in this global village – that benefits us all.
