April 2026 marks three years of civil war in Sudan. Currently, there is a historically high number of people displaced and more than 19 million people in desperate need of humanitarian assistance. And with humanitarian access severely limited, famine continues to devastate people living in El Fasher (North Darfur) and Kadugli (South Kordofan). Twenty additional areas are also at risk if violence escalates or if aid access remains blocked.
But in the midst of such suffering, there are actions of profound generosity. It’s one thing to give when you have plenty, but another to give when you have nothing left.
In North Kordofan, Sudan, thousands of families are living with emergency levels of hunger. Yet, for Amna, receiving a vital monthly food basket was not just an opportunity for her six children to eat – it was a chance to share what little she had with neighbours.
Between February and July 2025, LM International (partner of ERDO – Emergency Relief and Development Overseas) provided 4,055 households (20,275 individuals) with emergency food assistance, with funding support from the Government of Canada.
For Amna and many other displaced families who had lost everything after fleeing conflict, the monthly parcels brought more than just food; they brought new hope.
When violent clashes reached Amna’s village, her family immediately “left everything behind,” she says. “There was no time to pack. We just ran.”
After walking for hours under the hot sun, Amna and her children arrived at a camp for internally displaced people, with no assets or belongings. Life at the camp was not easy, and every day was a struggle to find enough food to feed her family.
“When I received the food basket, I felt so relieved,” Amna shares. “For the first time in a long while, I was able to prepare proper meals for my children. Seeing them eat and sleep with full stomachs made me very happy.”
