Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) and Lutheran World Federation – World Service (LWF) South Sudan are partnering on a food assistance project in Twic and Duk Counties in Jonglei State of South Sudan.
South Sudan is facing a severe humanitarian crisis, with 42% of the population (5.97 million people) experiencing acute food insecurity that has been intensified by political conflict since February 2025, including clashes between government and opposition forces. The situation is exacerbated by a protracted economic crisis, widespread flooding from the White Nile, and an influx of refugees from Sudan.
Twic East and Duk Counties are currently in IPC Phase 4. Twic East has endured recurrent flooding since 2020. Recent above-normal rainfall in late 2025 displaced over 56,000 people and destroyed cereal crops. Residents are relying on desperate coping mechanisms, including consuming water lilies and hunting. Duk is facing widespread insecurity including cattle rustling, child abductions, and banditry, which has limited farming to small, unsustainable plots. Over 22,000 people were recently affected by floods. Both counties are projected to need urgent food assistance through April 2026 to prevent catastrophic outcomes.
The project will provide monthly cash transfers of $14.55 CAD per household member for four months. The amount provided to each household will be scaled to the number of members, to a maximum of eight. The project will reach 9,998 individuals form 1,953 households.
