World Renew Canada is supporting Fondasyon Kole Zepol (Fonkose) on a food assistance project in the communes of Jean Rabel and Môle St. Nicholas of Haiti’s North-west Department.
Haiti faces both chronic structural challenges and acute humanitarian crises that together undermine the wellbeing of millions of people, particularly in rural areas. Poverty remains widespread. The situation is further worsened by recurring environmental shocks such as droughts and floods, along with widespread insecurity that disrupts transportation and markets, often forcing farmers to abandon their harvests. Travel between the North-west Department and the nation’s capital has been an on-and-off affair, depending on the willingness of criminal gangs to charge tolls and let vehicles through. This creates access challenges in rural areas for the many imported goods, including food, that Haitians depend upon. It also affects the ability of rural residents to earn cash to pay for what they need by sending crops to market. Haiti’s North-west Department is currently classified as IPC Phase 4 (Emergency), which is projected to persist through July 2026.
The project will provide cash transfers of $169 CAD per month for four months to 715 households comprised of 3,575 individuals.
