World Renew Canada and ZOA Nigeria are partnering on a food assistance project in the Wurno and Kware Local Government Areas (LGA) of Sokoto State in northwest Nigeria.
In recent years these LGAs in Sokoto State have experienced the compounding effects of climate shocks, armed banditry, and inflation which have triggered a humanitarian crisis and forced the displacement of thousands of people in the region.
Many families are struggling to access sufficient and diverse food and are resorting to increasingly harmful coping strategies. The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) indicates that Crisis (IPC Phase 3) outcomes will persist through May 2026.
In response, the project will provide cash transfers of $106 CAD per household per month for 3 months to 2,314 households, comprising 16,198 people. This will enable targeted households to purchase food items from local markets. It also includes a small stipend (~$2.71) for cooking fuel.
