The Adventist Development and Relief Agencies of Canada and Haiti are cooperating on a food assistance project in the Artibonite department – Anse-Rouge region of Haiti.
Haiti faces a severe crisis driven by political instability and economic decline. With 5.7 million people facing acute food insecurity, and 1.9 million of those facing emergency conditions (IPC Phase 4). This emergency is compounded by armed violence, displacement exceeding one million people, and high inflation disrupting supply chains.
In Anse Rouge, Artibonite, conditions are critical at IPC Phase 4. Assessments show over 90% of households suffer severe insecurity, with malnutrition surpassing emergency thresholds. Drivers of food insecurity include drought, soil degradation, and violence on transit routes. Consequently, families adopt negative coping strategies like rationing meals, selling assets, and withdrawing children from school, with female-headed households bearing the greatest burden.
To address this, the project will provide in-kind food distributions of 25 kg of rice, 12.5 kg of beans, 12.5 kg of pasta, 12.5 kg of maize meal, 5.7 liters of vegetable oil, and 2 kg of sugar, as well as cash transfers worth approximately $42.30 CAD for cooking fuel. This integrated approach ensures vulnerable families can purchase gas or charcoal to safely prepare rations, stabilizing the community where other humanitarian actors are absent.
The project aims to reach 1,000 households comprised of approximately 8,000 individuals.
