Mennonite Central Committee Canada (MCCC) and the Episcopal Church of South Sudan – South Sudanese Development and Relief Agency (ECSS – SSUDRA) in Unity State, South Sudan.
South Sudan is facing a catastrophic food security crisis, with over 53% of the population projected to face IPC Phase 3+ levels by the 2026 lean season due to combination of economic collapse, protracted conflict, and the displaced people from the Sudan war entering the country.
Unity State is the epicenter of this emergency. It not only hosts the country’s highest population of Internally-Displace People (IDP)s (464,000), but it faces persistent flooding, extensive malnutrition (IPC 4 and even 5) and cholera outbreaks. Recent cuts to USAID and WFP funding have created shortfalls in emergency food and nutrition assistance, and the influx of returnees has exhausted host community resources, sparking intercommunal violence and intense competition for dwindling food and land.
The project will provide eight months of in-kind food for 3,247 people in 822 households. Each individual will receive 15 kg of sorghum, 1.5 kg of beans, 1 litre of cooking oil, 500 g of salt and $4 cash to pay for milling sorghum.
