Tearfund Canada and Tearfund South Sudan are cooperating on a food assistance project in Aweil East County, Northern Bahr EI Ghazal, South Sudan.
Approximately 57% of South Sudan’s population is facing IPC 3 or higher levels of food insecurity. The region of Aweil East in particular was projected to be at IPC 4 or critical. Food insecurity is driven by depleted food stocks, high food prices, reduced purchasing power, and the ongoing crisis in Sudan, which has led to an influx of returnees and refugees, increasing competition for already scarce resources. Disrupted supply chains from Sudan and low harvests due to pests, animal diseases, and environmental factors have worsened the situation. Added to this are widespread incidence of human water-borne diseases, reduced market functionality and physical movement, trade disruptions due to bad road conditions during the rainy season, and intercommunal conflicts and violence. Aweil East County has also experienced devastating flooding that has destroyed crops and livestock.
The project will provide three monthly transfers of in-kind food assistance consisting of: 105 kg of cereals, 11 kg of pulses, 6 litres of oil, and 1 kg of salt per household. The project will assist 9,100 people in 1,300 households.
