Alongside Hope and Finn Church Aid are implementing a food assistance project in Fangak County of Jonglei State, South Sudan in response to widespread population displacements and chronic food insecurity.
About 6.3 million people (47%) of South Sudan’s population are facing acute food insecurity levels, IPC 3 (crisis) levels or higher. Fangak County has received nearly 27,000 returnees from Sudan since violent civil unrest occurred on April 15th, 2023. Heavy rains have also caused recurring floods that have affected close to 80% of the villages in Fangak County, submerging crops and plantations, and affecting current food availability and future harvests. In Fangak, 61,000 individuals are currently facing IPC 3 levels of food insecurity and 71,000 people are considered to be IPC 4. A recent food assessment found that 45% of households reported severe dietary deficiencies and a lack of food diversity, 35% of households are experiencing severe hunger, 20% of children under five are suffering from severe acute malnutrition and 15% from moderate malnutrition.
The project will provide monthly rations of in-kind food assistance of 45 kg of sorghum, 5 kg of beans, 3 litres of cooking oil, and 0.5 kg of salt per household for four months. The project will reach 9,510 individuals in 1,585 households.
