Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Canada and ADRA Sudan are partnering on a food assistance project in the White Nile and Al Jazirah States in Sudan.
Sudan’s civil war has displaced millions of residents, restricted market access and led to a rise in food prices throughout the country. Food distribution to areas in need has also been impeded by poor infrastructure and high transportation costs. In the White Nile State, 1.59 million people or 49% of the population was in IPC Phase 3 or above during the lean season of June to September 2024, with 422,442 of them in IPC Phase 4. In Al Jazirah, traditionally a major agricultural hub in Sudan, 62% of the population is classified in IPC Phase 3 or above, with 28% in IPC Phase 4 and a 196,223 people in IPC Phase 5. An assessment in September 2024 found that 93% of households affected by recent floods in August have limited food stocks, forcing the majority to rely on negative coping mechanisms. These challenges are further intensified by the conflict, which has made it increasingly difficult for communities to recover from the floods and grow food.
The project will provide cash vouchers worth CAD 120$ per month per household (of up to six members) for five months. 9,025 individuals in 1,504 households will receive assistance.
