World Renew is supporting the Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar (SAF/FJKM) with a six-month humanitarian response project in the Municipality of Ambovombe, Ambovombe District in the Androy Region of Madagascar.

The complex social and environmental challenges in this area have led to the near-total collapse of agricultural production and livelihoods of the majority of households. Insufficient rainfall, sandstorms and drought are some of the primary challenges causing this collapse. Recent IPC reports show 1.54 million people are classified as acutely food insecure (IPC 3 or higher), or 25% of the population, including 50,000 people in the emergency category (IPC 4). Most of the districts in the Great South of Madagascar will be in a situation of crisis until October 2023, including people in Ambovombe District. Other reports indicate that around 750,000 people in the Androy Region are expected to need humanitarian assistance, especially during the lean period which is typically associated with the peak of malnutrition.

SAF/JFKM will provide five monthly food basket transfers to 2,000 households (11,600 individuals). The monthly food basket will consist of 60 kgs of rice, 10 kgs of beans, and 4 litres of oil. A total of 600 mt of rice, 100 mt of beans and 40,000 litres of oil will be provided over the six-month project.
