Nature Positive Food Systems for Climate Change Adaptation (Nature+) is a Canadian Foodgrains Bank program to scale up nature-based solutions, enhance climate-resilient livelihoods, and enable women and other vulnerable people in communities—and their landscapes— to adapt to climate change.

As one of the projects in the Nature+ program, Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Canada is supporting ADRA Kenya with a three-year agriculture and livelihoods project in the Kanyangi Ward/Division, Kitui Rural Sub County, Kitui County, Kenya.

ADRA Kenya conducted a landscape learning exercise that identified drought and food insecurity as the major challenges facing people living in this landscape. An analysis of hazard/disaster profiles revealed that droughts, flooding, human disease outbreaks, livestock and wildlife epidemics, and crop infestations were negatively impacting local populations. In response to these issues, ADRA Kenya will strengthen the practice of conservation agriculture, engage in soil and water conservation activities, and establish tree nurseries to support natural regeneration and enrichment planting. Water management will be improved through the construction of sand dams, farm ponds, and gabions. Livestock and range management will be enhanced through the improvement of livestock extension services and animal health management practices. The inclusion and empowerment of women and other vulnerable groups will be a focus in all these activities.

ADRA Kenya aims to work with 3,000 participants from 3,000 households with a total of 15,000 people reached.
