Timeline: August 2024 – July 2029

World Renew Canada and Faith in Action (FIA) are implementing an agriculture, health, and livelihood project in Gabura Union of Shyamnagar Upazila in Satkhira District of Bangladesh.

Shyamnagar is the most climate-affected coastline region in Satkhira and has an IPC Level 3, with 10% of the population at IPC level 4. Gabura Union consists of 15 villages on a small island beside the world’s largest mangrove forest. Gabura Union is highly susceptible to cyclones and tidal surges, along with continuous river erosion, saltwater intrusion, and high levels of soil salinity. Accessing potable water is challenging, as is poor health and malnutrition. These disasters have devastating impacts, resulting in loss of life, property, biodiversity, livestock, and agricultural livelihoods.

The project will address four pillars of food security through promoting climate adaptive agriculture, income generating activities, health and nutrition training, and improving disaster preparedness and response systems. The project will utilize the People’s Institution (PI) model to organize youth and women’s groups for income-generation, rights-education, and advocacy.

The project will work with 2,100 direct participants and will benefit approximately 10,000 people in 2,000 households.
