A significant earthquake hit Kunar on August 31, 2025, causing significant loss of life and livelihoods and damage to infrastructure, markets, and food supplies.
This compounded an already challenging food security situation. Kunar was already experiencing a protracted crisis due to economic instability, extreme weather, and limited humanitarian access. As a result, even before the earthquake, over 310,000 people in Kunar were experiencing IPC Phase 3 or 4 conditions. The earthquake will compound an already challenging situation right before the harsh winter months.
The project will provide two monthly cash transfers worth approximately $112 CAD each to 6,440 individuals in 920 households.
