Presbyterian World Service & Development (PWS&D) and their local partner in Afghanistan are partnering on a food assistance project in Bamyan Province, Afghanistan.
Despite some recent marginal improvements, the food security situation across Afghanistan remains challenging due to the political transition in August 2021 and the impacts of natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, and droughts. In Bamyan province, harsh winters, geographic isolation, challenging topography, recurring droughts and flash floods have led to the death of livestock and the destruction of agricultural lands, homes, and infrastructure. The local economy, primarily based on agriculture and daily wage labour, has been crippled by broader economic instability, leaving many families struggling to survive. Local cultural practices also limit women’s ability to make decisions about household spending or resource allocation, which can further restrict their access to food. A recent survey found that 91% of respondents are experiencing poor food consumption. To cope, local residents are resorting to negative coping strategies like skipping meals and/or eating cheaper but less nutritious foods.
The project will provide five monthly cash transfers worth approximately $56 CAD each, during the most food insecure winter period from December-April to 23,100 individuals in 3,300 households.
