Canadian Lutheran World Relief and Lutheran World Federation – World Service (LWF) South Sudan are partnering on a food assistance project in Duk and Twic East Counties, Jonglei State, South Sudan.
South Sudan is facing a multitude of challenges due to years of violent conflict, systemic corruption, recurrent natural disasters, the compounding effects of climate change (e.g., drought and then flooding), economic crises, and the ongoing civil war in neighboring Sudan that has forced refugees into the country. Twic East and Duk have been hit particularly hard by recurrent floods from 2020 to 2024. The floods have displaced these populations and destroyed nearly 95% of cereal and vegetable crops, leaving many families struggling to obtain even one meal a day.
LWF South Sudan will provide cash assistance to meet 50% of the food needs of households for four months. An amount of USD $9.10 (~CAD $12.92) per person per month will be provided for up to 8 people per household. Household transfer amounts will be adjusted based on the number of people in each household. This direct cash transfer will enable the most vulnerable households to purchase their preferred foods from local markets.
The project will reach 11,440 individuals in 2,250 households.
