Mennonite Central Committee Canada and Mennonite Central Committee Bangladesh (MCCB) (through partners Caritas Bangladesh and Sabalamby Unnayan Samity (SUS)) are partnering on an agriculture and livelihoods project in three subdistricts in the Mymensigh and Sherpur Districts of northern Bangladesh.
People in these areas are dependent on agriculture and related work, but the agricultural sector is facing huge challenges with water availability for irrigation and drinking. This, in turn, means that there are fewer job opportunities and increasing migration.
The project will involve providing irrigation for agricultural sustainability and safe drinking water, and supporting climate change adaptation, gender equality, economic empowerment and peace building. The project will also support integrated homestead farming, demonstrating climate adaptive technologies, teaching technical skills for youths, health and nutrition care for pregnant mothers, and raising awareness on gender and peace and sustainability in marginalized Garo, Koach and Hajong indigenous communities.
This project aims to work with 4,520 participants in 2,845 households with a total of 12,802 household members.
