Nature Positive Food Systems for Climate Change Adaptation (Nature+) is a Foodgrains Bank program to scale up nature-based solutions, enhance climate-resilient livelihoods, and enable women and other vulnerable people in communities and their landscapes to adapt to climate change.
As one of the projects in the Nature+ program, Canadian Lutheran World Relief is supporting the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Ethiopia with a three-year agriculture and livelihoods project in the Ginnir District East Bale Zone, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia. As a result of climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation, the inhabitants of the Ginnir District East Bale Zone landscape continue to face issues of livestock overgrazing, soil erosion, food insecurity, and inaccessibility to water facilities. In response to these issues, LWF Ethiopia will strengthen the practice of conservation agriculture, agroforestry, and establishing and strengthening community managed nursery sites. Livestock overgrazing will be addressed through improved grazing and rangeland management. Water management will be improved through drip irrigation, soil and water conservation structures, and the construction of water harvesting ponds. The inclusion and empowerment of women and other vulnerable groups will be a focus in all these activities.
LWF Ethiopia aims to work with 5,498 households (8,247 direct participants) and an additional 19,253 people through broader landscape-level activities, for a total people reached of 27,500.
