After 15 months of fighting between Israel and Hamas, it is reported a ceasefire in Gaza and release of hostages and prisoners will begin on Sunday, January 19.
Canadian Foodgrains Bank welcomes the news of a ceasefire as a critical first step towards an end to the conflict, and the hope of ensuring more humanitarian assistance can be provided to the millions of people experiencing severe levels of hunger in Gaza.
“This conflict has caused unimaginable levels of destruction to people’s lives, homes, and communities in Gaza, and the recovery will be a long road,” says Miriam Harder, Foodgrains Bank senior program officer. “We’re grateful for this announcement of a temporary ceasefire that will hopefully not only halt all fighting, but also allow greater humanitarian support to be provided to millions of people in Gaza who are living through this crisis.“
Since the escalation of the conflict in October 2023, over 46,000 women, men, and children in Gaza have been killed, and over 110,000 people have been injured. The conflict has forced around 90 per cent of the population (1.9 million people) to flee their homes.
The levels of hunger in Gaza are unprecedented in recent history as 2.2 million people – the entire population of Gaza – are at risk of famine. Every person in Gaza is now experiencing acute food insecurity, and up to 345,000 people are facing catastrophic levels of hunger.
The situation in Gaza remains incredibly challenging and complex. The first phase of this ceasefire is a critical first step, but must be accompanied by improved humanitarian access to address the dire conditions Gazans are living in, and followed by a commitment to the second and third phases of the ceasefire deal.
Local partners of Foodgrains Bank members responding in Gaza are actively monitoring the situation as they continue to help families cope and begin to rebuild their lives.
