Mennonite Central Committee Canada is working with the Ministry of Refugees and Emergencies in North Kivu (ECC-MERU North Kivu) on an agricultural and livelihoods project in South and North Kivu regions of the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The security situation in the eastern DRC has continued to deteriorate after ten years of conflict, mass population displacements and continued food insecurity challenges.
This three-year project builds on the progress of the Humanitarian Early Recovery and Development program that was implemented from April 2020 until December 2023. It will aim to improve food security and livelihoods for Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and host community in North and South Kivu through the scaling up of agricultural extension activities, vegetable marketing, savings and credit groups, and diversified livelihood support. It will also integrate both gender transformation and peacebuilding activities, specifically harnessing the growing influence of women situation rooms and gender champions to facilitate dialogue on gender equality, promote women in leadership, strengthen protection systems and establish peacebuilding mechanisms.
The project will work with 1,178 households, who represent a total of 9,010 individuals.
