World Renew Canada is supporting Anglican Development Services – Mt. Kenya with a five-year agriculture and livelihoods project in Muguru, Kambiti, Ithanga and Mbiri Wards in Murang’a County, Kenya. The situation assessment found that rainfall has decreased in these wards in recent years.

A dependence on rain-fed agriculture has created challenges for food security. Additional challenges related to market knowledge and access, and gender dynamics also contribute to these food security challenges.

In response and to sustain long-term food security in these areas, ADS-Mt. Kenya will work on increasing food production through conservation agriculture, climate-smart technologies like compost and manure integration, water harvesting, cover crops and agroforestry. To complement these core activities, ADS-Mt. Kenya will also introduce gender activities as well as Village Savings and Loaning Associations (VSLAs) to enhance the growth of household income and savings as an avenue to reduce poverty and mitigate against further economic and climatic shocks.

Over five years, the project aims to work with 3,500 households (approximately 17,500 individuals).
