Afghanistan is facing one of the worst hunger crises in the world. One in three Afghans (approximately 15.8 million people) don’t know where their next meal will come from. Of these, 3.5 million people aren’t just hungry, they’re starving.
Thanks to the efforts of nearly 10,000 Canadians who petitioned the government to pass legislation (Bill C-41), organizations are now allowed to program in Afghanistan, like our members do through their local partners.
But our work is far from over. Persistent droughts have crippled farmers’ ability to grow food, unemployment rates are soaring, women are facing severe inequality, and food remains scarce.
