In response to the powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 and continuous aftershocks as high as 4.9 in magnitude, Canadian Foodgrains Bank and other leading Canadian aid agencies are responding through the Humanitarian Coalition (HC).
Communities are now facing an urgent humanitarian crisis as over 1,719 people have lost their lives, 5,000 are injured, and over 51,000 are still missing as rescuers race the clock to find survivors.
Up till July 14, the Government of Canada has announced that it will match all individual donations to the Humanitarian Coalition and its member charities, dollar for dollar up to $2 million.
“This additional funding comes at a critical time when thousands of families in Venezuela are in immediate need of humanitarian support as they lose their homes and livelihoods,” says Andy Harrington, Canadian Foodgrains Bank executive director.
“For many families, this disaster compounds already difficult living conditions. Venezuela is a country that already had eight million people in need of humanitarian assistance prior to these earthquakes – the largest to strike the country in over a century – and are now dealing with destruction that will take decades to recover from.”
Donations made through the HC will support immediate relief efforts, such as food assistance, emergency shelter, hygiene kits, and access to clean water for those rebuilding their lives after this disaster.
