Public Policy

Canadian Foodgrains Bank and member staff, and coalition partners meet with MPs during an advocacy week in Ottawa.

The Foodgrains Bank public policy department supports the mission of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank by influencing improvements in national and international policies that contribute to ending hunger.

We currently focus on the following issues:

Canadian Aid to Smallholder Farmers in Developing Countries – Canada has named Food Security one of five aid priorities although those priorities are currently under review. The Foodgrains Bank works with other Canadian aid organizations to ensure food security continues to be central to Global Affairs Canada’s development program.

Currently, Canadian Foodgrains Bank is advocating to the Canadian government to increase support for smallholder farmers through the aid budget through our Good Soil campaign. Learn more and get involved here.

International Food Assistance – Canada is a major food assistance donor noted for its ‘no strings attached’ approach to helping people facing immediate hunger. The Foodgrains Bank continues to work with Canadian aid officials to ensure that all Canadian food assistance is as effective as possible. We also work with aid organizations from Canada, the US and Europe to improve and strengthen international agreements about food assistance.

Climate Change and Smallholder Farmers – local partners in Asia and Africa tell us that smallholder farmers are facing new challenges in adapting to more flooding, more droughts and more storms. There is an urgent need to help these farmers adapt to climate change and to improve aid and other policies to empower farmers in these efforts.

We also work on other issues, including the human right to food.
