World Renew and ZOA-Dorcas South Sudan are partnering on a food assistance project in the Payams of Malualbai, Madhol, and Baac in Aweil East County, Northern Bahr Gazel State (NBEG), South Sudan.
South Sudan’s food security and malnutrition crisis continues to worsen due to a combination of economic instability, recurrent flooding, conflict, and the influx of returnees from the conflict in Sudan. Flooding in 2024 severely impacted livelihoods, particularly in regions already struggling with years of asset erosion and economic challenges. More than 379,000 people have been displaced, and extensive damage to infrastructure has hindered relief efforts. The IPC analysis for December 2024 to March 2025 projects that 393,000 people (40.8%) in NBEG will face Crisis (IPC Phase 3) or worse acute food insecurity, including 126,000 (13.1%) in Emergency (IPC Phase 4). From April to July 2025, food insecurity is expected to worsen, with 600,000 people (62.1%) in Crisis or worse, including 232,000 (24%) in Emergency.
The project will provide in-kind food assistance, primarily targeting those severely affected by flooding, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and newly arrived returnees. 1,620 households, with an average size of six individuals, will receive four monthly distributions of 50kg of sorghum grain, 5 kg of beans, 3 litres of cooking oil, and 0.5 kg of salt per month. An estimated 9,720 individuals are expected to benefit from the project.
