World Renew Canada and ZOA Sudan are cooperating on a food assistance project in South Darfur, Sudan.
Sudan has been engulfed in a civil war since April 2023. The food security situation is the worst ever recorded in Sudan, with 25.6 million (50% of the country’s population) experiencing hunger at levels of IPC 3 or higher. South Darfur has 14 localities that are classified as phase IPC 4, with 13 localities with 5-10% of their population in phase IPC 5.
Due to the conflict, displacement, and movement restrictions, people in Nyala Janoub and Nyala Shimal localities have missed their main planting season. Heavy rains and floods compounded the impact of conflict on the crisis, particularly after the collapse of Morni bridge in August 2024 which cut off South Darfur from the markets in Chad. Compounding these problems are restricted humanitarian access, dysfunctional health services, water contamination and poor sanitation and hygiene, increased morbidity due to waterborne diseases and increased cases of acute malnutrition.
The project will provide commodity vouchers for targeted households to receive a 50% food assistance ration, as currently recommended by the Food Security Cluster. Households will redeem monthly vouchers at pre-selected local vendors and receive 40 kg cereals, 5 kg lentils, 2 litres oil, and 1 kg salt for four months.
The project aims to reach 7,080 participants in 1,180 households, of which 60% are expected to be Internally Displaced Person households and 40% host community households.
