Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Canada is partnering with ADRA Haiti to implement a food assistance program in the Caracol region of Haiti.

The food security situation in Caracol is dire due to a combination of limited agricultural productivity, inflation, and recurrent natural disasters (e.g., hurricanes and droughts) that have severely impacted local food production. The situation has been further worsened by the ongoing political instability in the country and the closure of the nearby border with the Dominican Republic, which has shut down food imports and business opportunities.

According to the latest IPC analysis, approximately 4.97 million Haitians—almost half the country’s population were experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity for the period from March to June 2024. In Caracol, approximately 45% of households are experiencing acute food insecurity, with the majority unable to meet their daily nutritional needs.

The project will provide in-kind food baskets comprised of 25 kg of rice, 12.5 kg of beans, 12.5 kg of pasta, 12.5 kg of maize meal, 5.7 liters of vegetable oil and 2 kg of sugar, as well as a cash transfer of USD $30 per household to purchase cooking fuel (propane) for 3 months. ADRA Haiti is expecting to reach 8,560 participants in 1,070 households. The project will ensure equitable and inclusive access to food aid for both men and women, emphasizing vulnerable groups such as female-headed households, pregnant and lactating women, the disabled, and the elderly.
