Mennonite Central Committee Canada is supporting Score Against Poverty with a seven-month humanitarian response project in Ward 1, Mwenezi District of Masvingo Province, Zimbabwe.
The overall food security situation in Zimbabwe is alarming, with the country experiencing its worst food crisis in a decade. In April 2024, the country declared a state of emergency, citing reports from the World Food Programme that estimate six million people will be food insecure between 2024 and 2025. Mwenezi District is currently IPC 3, with a pressing need for emergency food interventions. This is primarily due to poor rains, prolonged drought and dry spells, low agriculture productivity, climate change related stressors and a general increase in food prices, all of which have threatened food security in the region. The specifically targeted ward is the most food insecure of all the 18 wards in the district.
Score Against Poverty will provide seven monthly food basket transfers to 720 households (3,600 individuals). The monthly food basket will consist of 10 kg of maize, 2 kg of beans, 750 ml of cooking oil, and 150 g of salt to 3,600 individuals. A total of 216 mt of maize, 43.2 mt of beans, 16.2 mt of cooking oil, 3.2 mt of salt will be provided over the six-month project.
