World Renew Canada is supporting the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) – Nkhoma Synod with a six-month humanitarian response project in Salima District, Malawi.

Malawi has experienced low harvests due to erratic rainfall caused by El Niño, high agricultural input costs, ongoing economic instability, high commodity prices, and inflation (33.3%), which are driving food insecurity, particularly in areas experiencing climatic shocks. In Salima District, the Central part of Malawi, the prolonged dry spell has severely impacted food security causing widespread crop failure, particularly of staple crops like maize, which many households depend on for food and income. This district has been classified as IPC 3. The 2024 lean season is expected to be particularly harsh, with maize prices skyrocketing and food insecurity worsening, especially for vulnerable groups like female-headed, child-headed households, the elderly and the chronically ill. CCAP-Nkhoma will provide five monthly food basket transfers to 1,715 households (8,575 individuals).

The monthly food basket will consist of 50 kg of maize flour, 10 kg of beans, and 3 litres of cooking oil to 1,715 households. A total of 428.75 mt of maize, 85.75 mt of beans, and 25,725 litres of cooking oil will be provided over the six-month project. In addition, the project will provide eight bundles of sweet potato vines, orange flesh variety, to each household to restore livelihoods during the November/December planting season.
