World Renew is supporting the Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar (SAF/FJKM) with a five-month humanitarian response project in the Municipality of Ifotaka, Amboasary-Atsimo District in the Anosy Region of Madagascar.
The southern region of Madagascar has 1.31 million people suffering from acute malnutrition and the same number of people experiencing IPC 3-level acute food insecurity. This already troubling situation is expected to deteriorate in the first part of 2025 with the levels of acute food insecurity jumping from 1.3 to 1.7 million people. Amboasary-Atsimo District is one of the most affected areas in southern Madagascar. Below-average maize yields, a near-complete depletion of household food stocks and declining livestock productivity are some of the challenges arising out of a complex social and environmental context. Insufficient and irregular rainfall, locust infestations, and other natural disasters have been further complicated by the presence of “dahlo” (armed groups), making the at risk population even more vulnerable.
SAF/FJKM will provide five monthly food basket transfers to 2,100 households (13,650 individuals). The monthly food basket will consist of 60 kgs of rice, 9 kgs of beans, and 2 litres of oil. A total of 630 mt of rice, 94.5 mt of beans and 21,000 litres of oil will be provided over the five-month project.
