World Renew Canada is supporting ZOA Refugee Care Nigeria with a four-month emergency lean season food assistance and nutrition education project in Damboa and Gwoza local government areas of Borno State, Nigeria.

The protracted conflict in Northeast Nigeria in combination with the impact of climate change has created a complex humanitarian crisis resulting in high levels of displacement, disrupted livelihoods, chronic food and nutrition insecurity and unavailability of stable income generating activities. The highest levels of food insecurity in seven years are being experienced, including in Damboa and Gwoza Local Government Areas, which are among the most severely affected areas. More than half of the population in Damboa and Gwoza are internally displaced people (IDPs) and about 72,184 persons in Damboa and 119,566 persons in Gwoza (both IDPs and host communities) are in IPC3 and in need of humanitarian assistance.

The proposed intervention aims to address acute food insecurity among 2,717 of the most vulnerable households (approximately 16,300 individuals), including internally displaced people (70%) and host community households (30%).

ZOA Nigeria will provide cash assistance to meet 65% of the food needs of households for four months, from August to November 2024. Targeting will ensure that children, pregnant and lactating women, older persons, and people living with disabilities are prioritized. The average household size is six and the average monthly transfer will be $60/month. A total of CAD $618,471 will be provided in cash transfers. Complementary nutrition education activities will also be provided.
