World Renew and the Mennonite Social Action Commission are partnering on a food assistance project in the Department of Intibucá in Honduras.
Honduras is facing a complex humanitarian crisis due to poverty, inequality, violence, climate-induced disasters, and increased human mobility. Nearly 16% of the population or 1.6 million people in Honduras require humanitarian assistance.
The Department of Intibucá’s agricultural sector faces significant constraints due to limited access to high-quality inputs, financing, infrastructure, planning services, know-how, and market information. Additionally, climate change is exacerbating risks for agriculture, with extreme weather events like heavy rainfall and prolonged droughts impacting producers’ resilience. As a result, people are resorting to negative coping strategies, such as selling assets, to obtain food.
These challenges disproportionately affect the indigenous Lenca people, whose traditional practices are primarily subsistence-based farming.
The project will provide in-kind food assistance for five months consisting of: maize flour (71.07 g), wheat flour (30.27 g), rice (105 g), beans (99.73 g) , oil (25.20 g), margarine (5.33 g), salt (10.67 g), oats (16 g), pasta (16 g), sardines (10.33 g), tomato sauce (3.53 g) and sugar (24 g). The project will provide food to 508 households consisting of 2,540 individuals.
