World Renew and ZOA are partnering on a food assistance project in three municipalities in the La Guajira Department of Colombia.
La Guajira is home to Colombia’s largest indigenous group the Wayuu Indigenous people as well as a significant number of Venezuelan migrants. The district has also been affected by climate change with very high temperatures, droughts, and floods contributing to water and sanitation challenges, livestock losses and increased risk of food insecurity. 59% of the district’s populations has recently been classified as food insecure – the highest rate in Colombia.
The project will provide e-vouchers valued at CAD $43 / person for up to six people in a household for six months. Project participants will then exchange the vouchers for food at pre-approved vendors. The assistance will be accompanied by education programs on nutrition and food conservation, as well as entrepreneurship and income generation. The project will reach 2,750 individuals in 611 households.
