Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Syria and ADRA Canada are cooperating on a food assistance project in the Latakia Governate of Syria.
More than 66% of Syria’s 15.4 million people are considered food insecure due to high inflation, stagnant salaries, trade and financial restrictions, and environmental pressures. The economic, climate, and conflict-related conditions that have led to this food insecurity since the onset of the crisis in 2011 are not expected to improve in 2024.
Compounding the problem is a shortfall in funding at the World Food Programme, which has drastically cut back its assistance to Syria. The loss of this support is exacerbating people’s food insecurity significantly and they are increasing adopting harmful coping mechanisms.
The project will provide households with eight monthly e-vouchers equivalent to CAD $100 that can be redeemed for specific food commodities at local merchants. The project will reach approximately 5,090 individuals from 1,018 households.
