Mennonite Central Committee Canada and Konbit Peyizan pou Ranfòsman Kapasite Lokal are working together on a project in the La Chapelle and Verrettes Communes in Artibonite, Haiti.

Konbit Peyizan’s previous project in the area has had a positive impact on the food security for project participants. However, they have not been able to counteract the very real macrolevel challenges caused by the ongoing insecurity and political instability, an increase in the cost of living, reductions in food production due to the impacts of climate change, deforestation, water shortages and declining soil fertility.

The project will strengthen food security and livelihoods for 1,564 vulnerable farming families from seven rural mountain communities in the Artibonite by providing participants with the tools and skills to diversify their agricultural and livelihood coping strategies. Project activities will include training, support and accompaniment in improved agricultural techniques, increased seed/grain storage, agricultural processing, support for community tree nurseries, vegetable production, savings and loan groups and income generating activities for women’s associations, and access to agricultural inputs. Konbit Peyizan will also support malnutrition treatment for 1,200 children and provide infant and young child feeding counseling/ education for their caregivers. This project will seek to increase gender equity while also strengthening the organizational capacity of community solidarity groups to manage community activities independently.
