World Renew and Lebanese Society for Educational and Social Development/ Middle East Revive and Thrive (MERATH) are responding to the ongoing crisis in Syria with a food assistance project in the Homs, Hama, Tartous, As-Sweida, Dar’a, Damascus and Rural Damascus governorates of Syria.

The humanitarian and food insecurity crisis in Syria, caused by protracted displacement, economic decline, inflation, escalation of hostilities, and the aftermath of the earthquakes that struck Syria in February 2023, has left over 7.2 million people displaced across Syria. Added to this are economic problems (e.g., severe currency devaluation and inflation) and climate change, which is driving higher temperatures and significant drought, further exacerbating the humanitarian situation for many Syrians who rely on agriculture for their livelihoods.

While IPC data is not available for Syria, other studies have shown high prevalence of acute malnutrition and wasting. Yet due to budget constraints, the WFP (World Food Programme) has recently drastically curtailed its programming in Syria.

In response, the project will provide monthly in-kind food baskets of 29 kg to 17,119 individuals in 3,583 households. The baskets will include: rice, pasta, bulgur, lentils, canned tomato paste, sunflower oil, olive oil, and sugar.
