Tearfund Canada is supporting Tearfund South Sudan with a five month food assistance project in Aweil East County, Northern Bahr El Ghazal, South Sudan.
In Aweil East County, an estimated 121,000 people, about 35% of the population, are facing emergency (IPC 4) food insecurity for the lean season, lasting from June to September.
There are multiple reasons for the current food insecurity – flooding caused widespread damage to homes as well as reducing crop yields besides conflict along the Aweil East border with Sudan causing many households to be displaced.
In response, Tearfund South Sudan will provide four-months of in-kind food transfers to vulnerable people affected by the conflict. Each month, households will receive sorghum, beans, oil and salt.
8,400 people (1,200 households) are planned to receive this assistance.
