Mennonite Central Committee Canada is supporting Episcopal Church of South Sudan – South Sudanese development and relief agency (ECSS-SSUDRA) with a twelve-month humanitarian food assistance project in Rubkona and Bentiu municipalities in Unity state, South Sudan.
Food insecurity remains high and continues to deteriorate in these regions due to extreme flooding that hit the region in 2021/2022, continued insecurity/conflict, COVID-19 and persistent drought in the Horn of Africa. The drought has intensified, and failed rains have led to crop and harvest failure in the agricultural regions of South Sudan.
In response, this project will provide 800 households (3,071 individuals) with twelve monthly of sorghum 15kg, beans 1.5kg, oil 1 liter and 500g per person. USD$2 cash will be disbursed for milling. The cash transfer is intended to mill sorghum grain. Due to challenges of getting firewood that was damaged in persistent floods, flour related dishes are increasingly becoming common and popular since they get ready faster with minimum amount of firewood or other alternative energy sources.
