World Renew Canada is supporting North East India Committee on Relief and Development (NEICORD) with a three-month food assistance project in Rongkhang Block, West Karbi Anglong District, Assam, India.

Flooding and landslides have affected over two million people in Assam since June 2022. 270,000 have been displaced and 174 deaths have been recorded.

Though the situation in Assam has improved with the flood waters receding in affected villages, food and nutrition insecurity are still a significant threat to these communities, particularly for already vulnerable households. 94% of households in surveyed villages lost their stored grains due to the flooding.

In response, NEICORD will distribute 6,000 rupees (C$100) per month to 1,171 households (6,273 people) for three months for the purchase of food. The cash assistance will be accompanied by a distribution of vegetable seeds to allow targeted households to restart kitchen gardens for household consumption when the food assistance ends.
