Nature Positive Food Systems for Climate Change Adaptation (Nature+) is a Foodgrains Bank program to scale up nature-based solutions, enhance climate-resilient livelihoods, and enable women and other vulnerable people in communities—and their landscapes—to adapt to climate change.
As one of the projects in the Nature+ program, Tearfund is supporting Fadhili Trust with a three-year agriculture and livelihoods project in the Mbui Nzau and Mikuyuni sublocations of Kikumbulyu South Ward, Kenya.
In these communities, food shortages are worsening due to the effects of climate change such as prolonged drought, high prevalence of crop pests and diseases, and flooding. These effects are compounded by high levels of soil erosion, reduced forest cover, and drying up of water sources. In response to these issues, Fadhili Trust will strengthen the practice of conservation agriculture, engage in soil and water conservation activities, and establish tree nurseries to support natural regeneration and enrichment planting. Water management will be improved through water harvesting methods and the construction of rock catchments, farm ponds, gabions, terraces, and water pans. Livestock and range management will be enhanced through fodder production and capacity building on livestock integration. The inclusion and empowerment of women and other vulnerable groups will be a focus in all these activities.
Fadhili Trust aims to work with 3,150 participants from 2,714 households with a total of 10,856 people reached.
