Nature Positive Food Systems for Climate Change Adaptation (Nature+) is a Foodgrains Bank program to scale up nature-based solutions, enhance climate-resilient livelihoods, and enable women and other vulnerable people in communities—and their landscapes—to adapt to climate change.
As one of the projects in the Nature+ program, The United Church of Canada is supporting the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) with a three-year agriculture and livelihoods project in 4 sublocations in Athi Ward namely Kilawa sub location in Athi; Katilini and Kalivu sub locations in Kalivu; and Munguni sub-location in Maluma.
These communities are facing severe food insecurity compounded by climate change and associated challenges such as soil erosion, inadequate and erratic rainfall, and water pollution in the Athi river which has negatively impacted humans and animals that depend on the water and the health of people. In response to these issues, NCCK will strengthen the practice of conservation agriculture, engage in soil and water conservation activities, and establish tree nurseries to support natural regeneration and enrichment planting. Water management will be improved through water harvesting methods and the construction of water pans and sand dams. Livestock and range management will be enhanced through capacity building on livestock food systems and processes. The inclusion and empowerment of women and other vulnerable groups will be a focus in all these activities.
NCCK aims to work with 9,983 participants with a total of 13,967 people reached.
