World Renew Canada is supporting Anglican Development Services of Mt. Kenya East (ADSMKE) with a six-month food assistance project in Igembe North, Meru County.
Many parts of Kenya are experiencing acute food insecurity caused by four consecutive seasons of below average rainfall. The drought has affected both cropping and pastoral communities and 4.1 million people are experiencing crisis or worse food security condition (IPC 3 and above).
The project will provide 1,500 of the most vulnerable households with five monthly cash transfers worth KES 7,472 (approximately CAD $81). Markets in the area are functioning and it is expected that food security will improve in early 2023 with the harvest of the most recent crop. As the area has good mobile network coverage, participants will receive their cash transfers through their M-Pesa mobile phone accounts.
This project aims to reach 7,500 individuals (1,500 households).
