Food assistance project in Nigeria

Emergency Food Assistance
Implementing Partner: ZOA Refugee Care Nigeria
Lead Member: World Renew Canada
People Served: 12,630
Budget: $1,088,230
Timeline: July 2021 - January 2022

World Renew Canada is supporting ZOA Nigeria with a seven-month food assistance response in Biu Local Government Area, Borno State. Millions of people in North-East Nigeria are facing food insecurity due to high levels of conflict which limit the ongoing dry season harvest and agricultural labor activities and have caused many to displace from their homes.

A large number of households have fled to Biu Local Government Area which is straining already limited food resources for the host community. The situation is further compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic which has disrupted already fragile value chains across the country.

In response, ZOA Nigeria aims to address the most urgent food needs to stabilize and increase immediate food consumption and decrease negative coping mechanisms by distributing monthly unconditional cash transfers to vulnerable displaced and host households. This will enable households to purchase food items and cooking fuel from local markets. A total of 12,630 people (1,804 households) will benefit from receiving the cash transfer.
