Rapid humanitarian assistance for food-insecure households in India

Emergency Food Assistance

People Served: 6,228
Budget: $500,000
Timeline: August - December 2021

Adventist Development and Relief Agency Canada is supporting Adventist Development and Relief Agency India with a five-month food assistance project in Tamil Nadu, India. The population of this area highly depends on migrant work and daily wage labour for their livelihoods.

The COVID-19 impact has negatively affected these income sources due to widespread lockdowns and economic slow-down. As many households do not have safety nets to depend on, many households are food insecure and economically vulnerable.

In response, this project will provide unconditional cash transfers to vulnerable households to be used to purchase essential food supplies from local markets. This will enable households to reduce negative coping strategies, such as reducing food and nutrition intake or borrowing money to purchase food. A total of 1,557 households will receive transfers benefitting a total of 6,228 people.
