Emergency Relief and Development Overseas is supporting Christ is the Answer Ministries with a five-month food assistance project in Athi River, Kenya.
A high proportion of Athi River’s populations suffer from the effects of poverty including insecure tenure, lack of access to basic services and poor hygienic conditions. Growing population pressures is also straining essential resources such as water and food. COVID-19 is compounding these issues along with significantly impacting the loss of livelihoods and income for many households due to lockdowns.
Households are coping by purchasing food on credit, borrowing from village savings or loan groups to purchase food, decreasing number and quality of meals and/or selling off household assets. In response, this project will provide vulnerable households with a monthly unconditional cash transfer for four months to purchase essential food supplies from local markets.
This will enable households to reduce negative coping strategies while providing them with a reliable form of support so they can focus on building their assets and livelihoods. 700 households will receive cash transfers benefitting a total of 2,800 people.
