Tearfund Canada is supporting Tearfund South Sudan with a four-month food assistance program in Baac Payam, Aweil East, South Sudan, with a total budget of $853,000.
This project is a continuation of similar activities completed in four previous phases. While there have been modest improvements in the food security of the targeted families, the ongoing civil conflict and political and economic problems faced in South Sudan, as well as recent poor harvests, continue to perpetuate an acute food security crisis. Floods in 2019 led to cereal deficits and farmers continue to struggle to access inputs due to high prices. Additionally, the COVID-19 situation is expected to worsen food insecurity as it has disrupted many South Sudanese economic activities and deteriorated many families’ ability to afford necessities.
In response, this project will provide 1,150 households (approximately 8,050 individuals) with three monthly food vouchers that will be redeemable at local markets for sorghum, beans, vegetable oil and salt. Households will also receive vegetable seeds and a set of tools to assist farmers in growing food during the dry season. The most vulnerable households will be targeted, including households with children, pregnant and lactating women, female-headed households, and/or households with elderly members or disabilities.
