A group of Kelowna golfers will take a swing at world hunger later this month, and they want other area residents to get involved.
The annual Swing at World Hunger golf tournament is sold out for the third year in a row. Proceeds will be donated to Canadian Foodgrains Bank’s work in ending world hunger.
This is a very generous group of folks doing a small thing to help make a big difference for people who are less fortunate around the world.”
The tournament began three years ago when a local committee got together to brainstorm ways they could respond to global hunger.
“Typically, the Foodgrains Bank receives support from a lot of agriculture-related projects that raise money by growing a crop or selling cattle,” says committee member Larry Mazur.
In fact, Mazur had been a founding member of a project near Roblin, Manitoba that harvested and sold a wheat crop to raise funds. After moving to Kelowna, he wanted to come up with a new project for others in the area to get involved.
“Since the Okanagan is more abundant with golfers than it is with grain, we decided to organize a golf tournament,” says Mazur.
The tournament will see around 50 golfers take to the course on Saturday, April 27 at Orchard Greens Golf Club.
The group has raised over $20,000 in the first two years, and they’re hoping additional donations this year will help them raise even more money for the cause.
