Long-term Responses

Responding to hunger in the long term

Our long-term development work focuses on supporting families’ efforts to provide food for themselves. This includes helping rebuild livelihoods after a crisis, promoting sustainable farming practices, and working with communities to strengthen their ability to respond to natural disasters and a changing climate. We also work with families to help improve their nutrition, paying extra attention to pregnant and nursing mothers and young children. We do this by supporting nutrition, hygiene and sanitation, and maternal health education programs.

Relying on local knowledge to create lasting change

The most effective and lasting initiatives are ones where communities facing hunger are active participants in crafting solutions to their unique challenges. When communities are facing long-term hunger, our members and their local partners work together with community members to strengthen local food systems and improve access to food for all.

Some examples of this work include working to improve existing farming practices, working to ensure marginalized community members, such as women and ethnic minorities, have more access and control over resources, and expanding income-generating activities to reduce people’s risk of falling into crisis.
