Psalm of Praise: O My Soul, Bless the Lord!

(inspired by Psalm 103)

O my soul, bless the Lord!
With all that is in me—body, emotions, mind, and will—
I praise God’s holy name!
O my soul, bless the Lord!
Sing songs of gratitude and love.
Sing, and never forget
all the wonderful things He has done for us:
in forgiving our sins,
in healing our diseases,
in delivering us from death,
in crowning us with love and compassion,
in filling our emptiness with good and beautiful things,
in satisfying our needs,
and renewing our strength.

God is compassionate and merciful,
slow to get angry, and filled with unfailing love.
When we cross all the lines, He is patient with us.
When we struggle against Him, He lovingly stays with us—
challenging, convicting, prodding.
He will not constantly criticize,
nor will He hold a grudge forever.
He does not punish us as we deserve.
In His mercy, he tempers justice with peace.
For His unfailing love toward those who fear Him
is as high as the heavens above the earth;
As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our sins from us.

So come, bless the Lord!
Bless the Lord, you heavenly messengers—
you powerful creatures who obey God’s every word.
Bless the Lord, armies of heaven—
you servants who stand ready to do His will.
Bless the Lord, all of creation—
all creatures in every part of the world!
O my soul, bless the Lord!
With all that is in me,
I praise God’s holy name!

~ Christine Longhurst, from Psalm 103
